Arizona Cardinals do well in Draft Picks

I was listening to Sports Talk Radio the other day, and heard that the Cardinals had built their team through the NFL Draft.  I wanted to see if this was the case, so I did a little research to see just how true this was.  I was surprised with the results I came up with.

Arizona Cardinals and their Draft PicksI wanted to see how many starters on the current Cardinals roster were actual high draft picks by the Cardinals.  I discovered that out of their current starters on offense, the Cardinals have 3 first round draft picks, and 1 second round draft pick.  Another player drafted in the third round is a contributer on offense as well.  There are three more current starters drafted by the Cardinals after the third round.  The Cardinals own draft picks account for seven out of the eleven starters on their current offensive roster.

When I took a look at the defense, I discovered that the Cardinals have 6 starters that were drafted by them in the first 4 rounds of the NFL Draft.  Two of them were the Cardinals number 1 and number 2 draft picks from 2008.  They also have another 4 defensive players drafted in the first four rounds that are still on the team, but are not starters.

Out of all the first round draft picks by the Cardinals in the last 10 years, only one is out of the league.  Four are starting with the Cardinals, while three are starting with other teams, and the remaining three are still playing in the league.  Two of the second round draft picks by the Cardinals over the last 10 years are still starters, and another one is still playing for the Cardinals.  Another three are still starting in the league with other teams, and one other player is still in the league.  There are four players from the Cardinals second round picks that are no longer in the NFL.  Three current starters on the Cardinals, and two additional players come from the Cardinals third round draft picks over the last 10 years.  There are two additional players still in the league, and five players are no longer in the NFL.

The Cardinals have been pretty successful with their draft picks in the first three rounds of the NFL Draft over the last ten years.  They have nine starters, and another three are still on the team.  Another twelve are still in the league, with six of them starting for other teams.  A total of ten players are no longer in the league from these draft picks, but even many of them played in the NFL for several seasons.  Overall, the Cardinals have 13 out of 22 starters coming directly from their own draft picks.  The Arizona Cardinals have done especially well in their Draft Picks over the past four years, with 16 players still on their roster, and 9 of them starters.  Check out my other posts on the Cardinals 2011 Draft, and a summary of the draft to follow.  Now, if they could just find a quarterback to replace Kurt Warner.
